SMH Consultants is seeking a motivated Survey Field Technician to support our land surveying team in Manhattan, KS. You’ll work alongside a Survey Crew Chief to complete a variety of land and engineering design surveys. Responsibilities include operating GPS equipment, robotic total stations, drones, levels, and locators; loading and unloading equipment; and assisting with construction staking, design surveys, utilities, boundary surveys, drone flights, and more.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S., have a valid driver’s license, and be able to work outdoors in all weather and in challenging environments such as construction sites, high-traffic areas, landfills, and streams. The role requires lifting up to 75 lbs., walking rough terrain, clearing vegetation, digging, and working 10+ hour days, occasional weekends, and traveling for projects. Candidates should be able to learn quickly, understand basic math concepts, and communicate effectively. AutoCAD experience and a CST certification are preferred but not required.

SMH Consultants is seeking a skilled Survey Crew Chief for our Kansas City (Mission, KS) office. In this role, you’ll lead a field survey crew, coordinate daily activities, handle complex field surveying tasks, and ensure training, quality, and safety for all crew members. You’ll help plan and execute construction, topographic, right-of-way, and control survey projects and participate in pre-survey planning with project managers, engineers, and contractors.
Responsibilities include managing crew operations, training staff in surveying methods and equipment use, collecting field data using GPS, preparing notes and drawings, and performing field surveys for clients. You’ll conduct advanced calculations, analyze raw data, and prepare grade sheets, topo maps, and survey records. The role also includes researching existing records and maintaining project files, with opportunities to gain experience toward professional licensure.
Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and have a valid driver’s license, 2–5 years of surveying experience, strong communication skills, and proficiency in boundary, topographic, utility surveys, and construction staking. CAD experience (preferably Autodesk Civil 3D) and CST certification are preferred.
